A loaf of meat, a jug of beer, and chow!

Recipes For Single Guys

It doesn't get much simpler than basic meat loaf. If you can't make this, you can probably burn water.

I haven't made many meat loafs in my life. In fact, I've made exactly one, and it wasn't remarkably bad. If you would like a point from which to improve, here is your opportunity.

Here's your grocery list:

  • One and a half pounds of hamburger
  • Two cups of Wheat Chex
  • One bottle of A1 steak sauce - (the 5 oz. size)
  • Two potatoes
  • Ketchup

Supplies

  • A cooking pan about nine inches square and a couple inches deep. (Any big pan will do)
  • A big mixing bowl

The procedure is ridiculously simple. Crush the Wheat Chex into a fine crumbly mess. Drop the meat into the mixing bowl and form it so the lump of ground meat has a little crater. Put in the Chex powder and the entire bottle of A1 steak sauce into the center of the meat. Now the fun part!

Squish it. Feel the ooze of cold, red cow meat squirming wetly through your fingers. Mix the grit with the blood, the sauce with the fat, the meat and it's master. Praise the glory of the animal that was killed for your carnivorous fervor.

Form the sticky mess into a loaf and place it in the cooking pan, leaving enough room on the side for the potato bits.

Now, here's a secret of potatoes - They don't like to cook and will resist it like a stubborn cat. There's no quick heat and eat when it comes to potatoes. So, to get them to cooperate, cut them into at least eight pieces and scatter the little squares around beside the mound of greasy meat.

Finally, smear the top of the meat loaf with a glistening veneer of ketchup and cook the meat and potatoes in the oven at 450 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

Slice thickly and serve with potatoes and peanut butter sandwiches.

Suggested beverage: beer.

Remember when you're making meat loaf, you're making leftovers. After you slice off your portion and spoon out a few of the grease filled potatoes, let the rest cool down and when you're done with the feast, cover the pan with some plastic wrap and put it in the refridgerator. When you want some more, slice of a hunk and microwave it.

Remember, cold meat loaf on bread is not as bad as you might think.

Chow.
